Have a better day at work

Mapiq uses technology to improve people’s working lives. It’s a concept that carries its own communication challenge; many people are wary of their purpose. Mapiq uses psychological research to develop its products and communicates its findings with white papers and case studies.

Developing style

I worked closely with their Head of Research, doing full structural content edits to ensure her ideas were communicated clearly and effectively. Based on our work, we worked with my copywriting colleague to develop a clear tone of voice guide for the organization and an in-house style guide using American English and based on the CMOS. This was a change from their earlier British usage.

Cooking under the sky

OFYR is a line of outdoor cookware centered around a communal experience. The brainchild of a Dutch entrepreneur, the decadent-rustic cookware is getting its message out quickly to industry professionals and the general public.

Products & communications

In addition to editing and copywriting the burgeoning scale-up’s press releases, mission statement, brand story, and values, I edited their first luxury cooking magazine and the product descriptions for their extensive product line. They use British English. I suggested the Guardian/Observer style guide for a contemporary tone and the online posting that allows employees to consult it freely.

Anthropological academic book

Joep Rottier wrote this book about New Zealand’s experience of completely decriminalizing the sex industry. It was based on extensive legal and academic research, as well as more than 100 interviews with key actors and participants in the sex industry.

APA proofread & copyedit

To prepare the book for his Ph.D. thesis defense and publication, I proofread for errors and did a sentence-level copyedit. Joep, whose first language is Dutch, wanted to write in a way that met academic standards but maintained readability for a general audience. We used American English and APA style.

LEWIS: Webinar Business English for Dutchies

Editing

LEWIS Company Logo

I’ve developed a series of trainings with LEWIS to help people whose native language is Dutch write better in English. I was inspired by my three years of editing for people whose native language is Dutch. However, the topics are useful to anyone writing in English as a second language and some of them are important for native speakers, as well. (Such as people who write strings of ten-word sentences and misplace modifiers…) This webinar was designed to be a teaser for the courses.
